Gethsemane's Cup of Agony
Gethsemane's Cup of Agony
Themes of impending betray, friendship & agony.
Maundy Thursday is the day before Good Friday. Maundy is from the Latin word mandatum meaning command. It commemorates the night before Jesus died, when He shared the Passover meal with His closest friends and followers. Jesus washed the feet of His followers and commanded that we love one another in the same way
After the feast, Jesus spent harrowing hours in waiting, asking the disciples to come alongside him in prayer. Kneeling down in His place of secret prayer, the Mount of Olives, He prayed three times, "Take this cup of agony away." As we all have, the disciples betrayed Him and deserted Him in His hour of need.
This image ripe with the potential to awaken deeper insight into the fundamental nature of the holy day it represents.
